Building & Extensions

Extending or reconfiguring your home is often a more affordable and less stressful option than moving. JFD handles everything from single-storey extensions to major structural builds across Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex.

Whether you need more space for a growing family, a better-flowing layout or a complete transformation, our experienced builders manage the project from foundations to finish. We handle repairs, alterations and extensions of every scale, breathing new life into your property while keeping disruption to a minimum. Based in Midhurst, we build throughout West Sussex — from Chichester to Petersfield — as well as across Surrey and Hampshire.

With over 20 years of construction experience and Federation of Master Builders membership, every build is delivered with precision, clear communication and respect for your home — on time and right first time.

How does JFD manage a build from start to finish?

Every build starts with a free, no-obligation site visit. We listen to how you want to use the space, assess what is structurally possible and give you an honest, itemised quote — no vague allowances or surprise extras later. Where you need architectural drawings, structural calculations or a planning application, we coordinate the architect and structural engineer on your behalf. Recent projects range from garden rooms in Haslemere to two-storey extensions outside Chichester, and every quote is broken down line by line so you can see exactly where the budget goes before you commit.

On site, one dedicated project lead runs the job from groundworks through to the final coat of paint. Foundations, structural openings, roofing, electrics, plumbing, plastering and decoration are all sequenced so trades never trip over each other — and you always know what is happening that week.

Who handles planning permission and building regulations?

Many single-storey rear and side extensions fall under Permitted Development and need no planning application at all; two-storey and larger projects usually do. We tell you which applies before you spend a penny, and handle the submission either way. Every JFD build is constructed to current Building Regulations — covering structure, fire safety, insulation (Part L), drainage and ventilation — and signed off by building control on completion.

Where your project sits near a boundary or a shared wall, we manage Party Wall agreements with neighbours so the job stays on the right side of the law and on good terms with the people next door.

How long does an extension take?

As a rough guide, a single-storey rear extension typically takes 10–14 weeks on site, a two-storey extension 14–20 weeks, and a full renovation with an extension can run to several months depending on scope and ground conditions. We give you a realistic programme up front and keep to it — over 20 years of experience means we plan around lead times, weather and the unexpected, rather than being caught out by them.

FAQ

Building & Extensions — frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for an extension?

Not always. Many single-storey rear and side extensions fall within Permitted Development rights, meaning no planning application is required. Two-storey extensions, properties in conservation areas and larger projects usually do need permission. We assess this at the first site visit and handle any application for you.

How long does a single-storey extension take to build?

Most single-storey extensions take around 10–14 weeks on site once groundworks begin, depending on size, ground conditions and finish. We provide a detailed programme before work starts so you know each stage and milestone.

Will the work meet building regulations?

Yes. Every build is constructed to current Building Regulations and inspected by building control at key stages, with a completion certificate issued at the end. We manage the entire building control process on your behalf.

Can we stay in our home during the build?

In most cases, yes. We phase the work and seal off the construction zone to keep dust and disruption to a minimum. For larger projects that affect your kitchen or only bathroom, we will talk through the practicalities before we start.
